I would like to further point out that Saeran doing “bad things” was the result of being drugged and brainwashed (because surviving child abuse had not fractured him into becoming a “bad person” until Rika brought him into Mint Eye.)
Rika, however, knew that she was wrong, but chose to continue on that path — even when both V and Jumin told her she was radical. She had a support system, a therapist, and medications at her disposal but she chose to follow her “devil” and create a place where her wrongdoings were justified and made right (by her standards.) If people rejected her and her ideals, she tortured and drugged them into submission.
Would I love a story where Rika wasn’t that far gone and got the actual help she deserved? Yes. Would I love it if V had not played into her deranged plan and sought her some serious medical attention before she founded Mint Eye? Yes. And I would be all on for a story that stops her from getting to that point, but nothing can justify what she did the minute she was the “Savior” of a cult by her own choice. She knew she was wrong and sick, but decided to create a world in which her issues were normal and her actions were permissible.
Saeran didn’t have a choice.
But every time I hear people justify Rika and say we only apologize for Saeran’s wrong-doings because he’s a dude, I wanna slam my head against the table as they are missing out the detail and heart of the matter.
And V — no matter how much I agree he was in a bad and abusive relationship (the recipient of that abuse) he is part of the problem the moment he didn’t do what he had to do and decided to go on some self-sacrificing bullshit journey instead of getting that place shut down, the responsible people arrested, and the sick some much deserved medical treatment. So, yes, he is a problem in the equation too by trying to fix something that was bigger than him and needed a more efficient resolution than offering himself as a sacrifice to a group of radicals.
